Karyae Park Clean-up - October 17th

Hello Everyone,

Big day out at Karyaé Park on Saturday, October 17th!

This year, the Gaston County 4-H Youth Council selected an old dump site located out at Karyaé Park to support their combined annual community service project. The deposited waste is located at the bottom of a ravine in the direct path of stream waters and its continued existence represents a great hazard for many people in our community. This clean-up represents one of the first steps toward improvement of the lake areas to support park access and recreation. Our focus is the dump clean-up, however, we are organizing many related property clean-up and improvement activities. Your involvement in our youth coordinated event sets the stage for local interest in supporting youth development efforts, and represents the culture of a strong community.

Other community partners that will be participating include McMillan Crane Service, Gaston County YMCA, and Gaston County Public Works.

Please consider coming out and contributing to the success of our annual community service event by rolling up your sleeves and getting involved.

Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions @ 704-718-3149.

  1. Wow! First run, and this was without a crane. We managed to fill a complete 30 cubic yard rolloff that was provided to us by Gaston County Public Works. All in all we had volunteers from YMCA, 4-H, Teens-Changing-Gaston, JC's, and Camp Karyae Board of Directors. Everything from refridgerators, to bath tubs, to vaccume cleaners. Thank you everyone!

  2. Second run... (looks like it's going to take at least two more days to get this site close to clean).

The crane came out early last Friday and got stuck in the mud up to its axles. Needless to say we had to get a LARGE wrecker out there to pull him out. What a “Make a Difference” day it was though. The community really pulled together, and before we knew it, not only was the wrecker donated to support our illegal dump site clean-up, but a landscaping company came out and graded the area where the crane had originally gotten stuck, then a construction company came out and dumped and leveled three big dump trucks full of crush and run (~54 tons). We actually ended up making an access road that morning in just a couple of hours. The crane came back and we were able to pull out some significant pieces from the site, in fact we pulled out almost as much stuff as we had gathered the previous Saturday. The crane has been donated to us for two more future dates to finish up the site. I think we are about half way through it. Keep on the look out for future date announcements.
